Skype 5.1 aims to improve its interface

Skype, arguably the most popular VoIP and video calling service, has been updated today to version 5.1 for Mac, adding new features and fixing some issues, as a result of the feedback gathered from users since Skype 5 for Mac was released.

This version 5.1 includes improvements to the group video calling interface, as well as allowing you to select recent numbers on the dial pad, which had already been redesigned in the previous version, and also fixing bugs, such as the detection of iSight webcams over FireWire.

Along with this update, Skype has decided to run a contest to reward whoever designs the best chat interface for the application. I imagine this is due to the criticism of its look that emerged shortly after Skype 5 was launched, which led many users to create their own custom themes.

To encourage designers to take part, Skype will reward the participants with Apple products (iPads, a MacBook Air, Apple TV…) and a free one-year subscription to its premium Unlimited World Extra system.
