Sound bars for TV: Sonos Arc Ultra vs Samsung HW-Q990D vs Bose Smart Ultra

Real comparison of the three premium sound bars of 2026, analyzing channels, Dolby Atmos, compatibility with Apple TV 4K, AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. A clear verdict based on your profile and your living room.

Barras de sonido para tele: Sonos Arc Ultra vs Samsung HW-Q990D vs Bose Smart Ultra

Setting up a decent sound system in the living room no longer means a 15-kilo AV receiver or running cables along the skirting boards. In 2026, premium sound bars have taken over much of that market, and three models account for nearly all the conversation: the Sonos Arc Ultra, the Samsung HW-Q990D and the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar. All three cost around or above €1,000, and all three promise “real” Dolby Atmos. But they are not the same, and the choice changes quite a lot if your main source is an Apple TV 4K.

This is not a rehash of any of their press releases. It is hours of use with movies, series and music, and an honest reading of which one suits someone living inside the Apple ecosystem best.

Summary table: specs and official price

First the data. Prices checked in October 2026 on each manufacturer’s official websites in Spain.

Model Channels Dolby Atmos DTS:X AirPlay 2 HDMI Official RRP
Sonos Arc Ultra 9.1.4 Yes No Yes 1 eARC €999
Samsung HW-Q990D 11.1.4 (with sub + rears) Yes Yes No 2 (1 eARC) €1,699
Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar 5.1.2 (virtual) Yes No Yes 1 eARC €999.95

The Samsung is the only one that comes with a wireless subwoofer and rear speakers in the box. The other two are soundbars on their own; adding a sub and surrounds drives up the spend.

Design and finishes

The Sonos Arc Ultra is the longest: 118 cm. If your TV is a snug 55″, it overhangs. From 65″ up it fits without any problem. Perforated polymer finish, matte, very understated. 5.9 kg.

The Samsung HW-Q990D measures 123 cm and weighs 7.9 kg for the bar alone. Add the subwoofer (9.8 kg) and two rear satellites. It is a complete system, not just a bar. To appreciate it you need space and, above all, power sockets close to the rear speakers.

The Bose Smart Ultra is the most compact: 104 cm and 5.8 kg. Metal grille, tempered glass end caps on the black version. The most “furniture-like” of the three.

Sound performance with film

This is where they really part ways.

The Samsung HW-Q990D wins on volume and surround envelopment. It offers a genuine 11.1.4 with physical speakers behind you. On films with aggressive Atmos mixes (Dune: Part Two, Top Gun: Maverick) the dome effect comes through without tricks. It is the closest thing to a classic 7.1.4.

The Sonos Arc Ultra is the best “standalone” bar you can buy today. With the new Sound Motion technology (dual woofer) it delivers bass the original Arc never came close to reaching. The front soundstage is very wide. If you later add a Sub 4 and two Era 300 as rears, it approaches the Samsung in immersion and surpasses it in dialogue clarity.

The Bose Smart Ultra relies on its TrueSpace tech, which simulates height and surround without physical speakers up or behind you. It works surprisingly well in small rooms, but it does not fool anyone: there is no real ceiling. In large living rooms it falls short of the other two.

Performance with music

The Arc Ultra is the most musical out of the box. Balanced tuning, centred vocals, present bass without muddiness. It works finely with Apple Music via AirPlay 2.

The Bose has a warmer sound, pleasant for background music but less resolving on dense mixes.

The Samsung sounds good, but its signature is clearly “cinema first”. For music alone, it is the one that excites least of the three.

Compatibility with Apple TV 4K and AirPlay 2

If your main player is an Apple TV 4K (3rd gen, 2022 onwards), this weighs heavily.

  • Sonos Arc Ultra: native AirPlay 2. It appears as a destination from iPhone, iPad and Mac. It integrates into the Home app as a HomeKit accessory. You can group it with a HomePod 2 or with other Sonos speakers. If you want a better sense of which Apple speaker complements which use, we have a comparison of HomePod 2, Sonos Era 300 and HomePod mini that helps you decide.
  • Bose Smart Ultra: it also has AirPlay 2 and built-in Chromecast. Good integration, although the Bose Music app is less polished than Sonos’s.
  • Samsung HW-Q990D: has no AirPlay 2. Only Bluetooth and the SmartThings app. For an Apple household this is a serious drawback. You can send audio via HDMI from the Apple TV without issue, but you lose the ability to send music directly from the iPhone to the bar.

For HomeKit, Sonos works through the official integration (you control volume and input from the Home app). Bose is not in HomeKit. Samsung is not either.

Codecs and formats

All three support Dolby Atmos via eARC. The difference:

  • Samsung adds DTS:X, which matters if you watch physical UHD Blu-rays (many use DTS:X Master Audio).
  • Sonos and Bose do not decode DTS in any variant. They downmix to stereo or PCM. If you have a Blu-ray player, it is something to keep in mind.

For pure streaming (Apple TV+, Netflix, Disney+, Max) everything comes in Dolby Digital Plus or Atmos, so this will not affect you.

Connectivity and HDMI

The Samsung is the only one with two HDMI ports (1 input + 1 eARC), useful if you want to route a console through the bar without using up ports on the TV.

The Arc Ultra and the Bose have a single HDMI eARC port. You connect to the TV and that’s it. Everything else (Apple TV, PS5, Switch 2) goes to the television. For most people this is enough.

All three support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 or higher. Sonos and Bose include an optical input; the Samsung does too.

Expansion and ecosystem

The Samsung HW-Q990D is closed: it is what it is, a complete 11.1.4. You cannot add more speakers.

The Sonos Arc Ultra is the most flexible: you add a Sub 4 (€849), a pair of Era 300 as rears (€919 for both) and you have a real 9.1.6 controlled from a single app. Expensive, yes, but it grows with you.

The Bose Smart Ultra supports the Bass Module 700/900 and the Surround Speakers 700, although the full setup shoots past €2,500.

Real price and value for money

As of October 2026:

  • Samsung HW-Q990D: €1,699 RRP, but it is usually found between €1,299 and €1,399 at MediaMarkt and El Corte Inglés. It is the most complete purchase per euro spent if you don’t need AirPlay.
  • Sonos Arc Ultra: €999 at Sonos.com and the Apple Store. It rarely drops. It is the best starting point if you plan to expand the system.
  • Bose Smart Ultra: €999.95 official, seen at €849 in occasional promotions. The easiest to place and use, the one that requires the least thought.

Verdict by profile

If you have an Apple TV 4K and live in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, Mac, HomePod): Sonos Arc Ultra. The AirPlay 2 and HomeKit integration is the best of the trio, and the sound quality is outstanding for a standalone bar.

If what you want is maximum home cinema, without expanding anything, and you don’t mind about AirPlay: Samsung HW-Q990D. For what the full box costs, there is no rival. It is the closest thing to a complete 7.1.4 without a receiver.

If you value discreet design, a medium or small living room and quick setup: Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar. It is the least ambitious in power, but the friendliest day to day.

FAQ

Can I use the Sonos Arc Ultra as the main speaker alongside the HomePod? Not in the strict sense. But you can group them in AirPlay 2 from iPhone or Mac and play the same music on both simultaneously.

Does the Samsung HW-Q990D work with Apple TV 4K? Yes, over HDMI eARC it passes Dolby Atmos without issue. What you lose is the ability to send audio directly from the iPhone (it has no AirPlay 2).

Is the Arc Ultra worth it over the original Arc? If you’re coming from the 2020 Arc, the jump in bass and clarity is clear thanks to the new Sound Motion woofer. If you’re setting up a system for the first time, go straight for the Ultra.

Do I need a subwoofer with these bars? The Samsung already includes one. The Arc Ultra holds its own better than any previous bar, but it gains with a Sub 4 if your living room is over 25 m². The Bose practically needs a sub for action films.

Can I control the bar with Siri? Sonos and Bose, yes (via HomeKit in Sonos’s case, via AirPlay 2 in both). Samsung, not natively.
